Take a break, read a page

The #ApageAday project is open to everyone who can hold up a book and read for themselves. To participate, just pick any book (fiction, non-fiction) and read a page from it.

“But we emphasise that it must be a book that you would enjoy reading with delight and not as a forced exercise,” says Abigail Anaba, the project’s coordinator. “Our goal is to get as many people as we can on the road to reading for pleasure, and we hope that the public, young and old, will join in to make that dream a reality.”

Your ticket to the VVIP Table

GrillandRead is offering one seat a week on the GaRARA2017 VVIP table to five persons in the coming five weeks. To participate in the campaign, upload a one minute video of yourself reading a book with the following tags: #GaRARA2017 #APageaDay #Entry.

“This is so that our team can find them easily on social media,” Anaba says during the official announcement on 29 August, exactly two months to the awards ceremony in Lagos. “Every week, for the next five weeks, entries will be collated across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and a draw will be done to determine who wins; needless to say that the more entries we receive per person the greater their chances of winning.”

Pause for a change

When you really think about it, our daily routine chokes up our time so much that the prospect of settling down to read a book is the least thing on the minds of most, though we wish we could just curl up on the bed or a sofa to enjoy that novel or biography.

One reason we may not be reading is because it is possible to get away with it. Or, rather, we think it is possible to get away with it. The reality is that we hardly ever do. People who do not read are usually at the bottom rung of the knowledge chain and this often translates to not making any personal or career advances.

Says Anaba: “At GrillandRead, we take the saying that ‘reading improves the mind’ seriously. And in the past one year we have sought to redefine and celebrate the fast-vanishing habit of reading for pleasure with fun events and activities, including: the GrillandRead Book Party; Speed-Dating With Books; the GrillandRead Reading Festival and, lately, the GrillandRead Annual Readers Award (GaRARA), which holds later this year on 28 October.”
