Finding Happiness Through Books you Read this October

Welcome the “ember” month that does not say ’ember’ at the end, October.

In the recent past, Nigerians have been referred to as the happiest and most optimistic people in the world. Though Nigeria ranks 91 of 156 in 2018, we are still allowed to celebrate what we once were. So, on such an important month in Nigeria’s history, GrillandRead has chosen the theme “Happiness.” Nigeria has celebrated its independence from British colonial rule on October 1 every year since 1960.

Read on to learn about books that will help in finding happiness this October.

September Recap

How did you reading plan go for September? Did you complete any of the three suggested titles? As a reminder, we suggested you read Fela: This Bitch Life by Carlos Moore, Losing my Virginity by Richard Branson and Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor?  We even offered free copies of Wise Blood. If you did read the books, did you reflect on the lessons which could be learned from these books? Remember, we do not read only to cover pages. For reading to be meaningful, we must meditate on the things read and access the lessons.

Finding Happiness this October

Let’s move on to ‘Happiness’. Who does not want to be happy? Yet, happiness continues to elude mankind. Sometimes, people say happiness is difficult to find because it means different things to different people. What does finding happiness mean to you?  And how can you find happiness in the midst of life’s turmoil?

“The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance, the wise grows it under his feet.” – Charles Spurgeon.

Our October reads will take you through the lives of two men and one woman as they share how they have found happiness. Here are the two books as suggested reading for this month:

The Book of Joy by Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. This book seeks to answer the question; how can humans find happiness in the face of suffering? The two writers of this book have been described as the ‘World’s Happiest Men’. We really should learn their secrets, shouldn’t we?

Hardcover $16.11 available on Amazon

Year of Yes: How to Dance it Out, Stand in the Sun and be your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes. Renowned screenwriter, Shonda Rhimes said yes to every opportunity she got for a year and shares her experience in this book. This book will probably remind you of the movie, Yes Man.
