“I can’t believe my eyes. This can’t be my daughter!” he said, slamming the phone on the bed. The polaroid picture of his only daughter wearing an armless black top, with a “don’t mess with me” look on her face, was nothing like the daughter he had raised. Mr Nwoke believed he had trained his only daughter and child right. He was disappointed to say the least.
“You won’t believe she used this picture as her WhatsApp profile picture. I told her to take it down and she told me there’s nothing absolutely wrong with it,” Mrs Nwoke stated angrily, the typical African mother. “Our daughter has changed. I don’t know what has come over her.”
While they were yet speaking, their daughter, Adanne walked past them in the sitting room heading to her bedroom. She knew they were talking about her because she could hear them discussing in hushed voices from the kitchen that she has been, preparing dinner.
“Ada!” her father called out, “come here”. She dragged her feet slowly buying time to prepare herself mentally for whatever her overly religious father had to say.
“Take down that picture of yours”, her father instructed.
“You can’t tell me what to do”, the words came out of her mouth before she could filter her words.
“Sorry?” Her father was stunned, “Isigini?”
“I said, you can’t tell me what to do. I am not a child. I am twenty-four years old dad!” she said trying so hard not to raise her voice at her parents.
“I said it!” Her mother shouted raising both hands in the air dramatically, “This girl is possessed. Something has indeed entered into her!”
Adanne rolled her eyes in exasperation. She has never seen anyone as dramatic as her mother. “Here we go again!” Adanne muttered. “I am sick and tired of you guys treating me like a baby. I am an adult and I’d love if you two treated me like an adult.” She was battling to remain calm.
“Wow! Esther Nwoke has given birth to a rebel!” Her mother rose as she entered full blown dram mode. “What’s next, you are going to beat me?”
“Calm down my love”, her father beckoned on his wife. He couldn’t believe what his beloved daughter was saying. His daughter who has always listened to him and has never gone against his instructions before and because of this, he would always brag about her to his friends. Now, has grown wings and has decided to raise her voice in defiance to him. Unbelievable!
“All I’m saying is that this picture is not proper for a Christian to post online and I request that you please take the picture down”. He said calmly, hoping that this approach would reach her heart.
“Why?” she asked. She couldn’t believe her parents. “What is wrong with this picture?”
“His daughter who has always listened to him and has never gone against his instructions before and because of this, he would always brag about her to his friends. Now, has grown wings and has decided to raise her voice in defiance to him. Unbelievable!”
“What is not wrong with this picture? Can’t you see that you look like you are naked?” her mother shouted. “You are a Christian and a true Christian isn’t supposed to snap pictures like this”
“You two are unbelievable! Can you see my breast in this picture? Can you see my thighs? Isn’t it obvious that I’m wearing a black top in this picture? How would anyone think that I’m naked in this picture all because my shoulders are showing?” She asked instantaneously, not giving them time to answer her questions. “I am sick and tired of this to be honest. Are you the only Christians on earth?” she said shouting at her parents. She tried not to raise her voice at her parents but she couldn’t believe what her parents have been saying and how overly righteous they have become.
“Well, I just want to tell you two that I am now a face model. I have already registered…”
“God forbid! No child of mine will be a model. That will only happen over my dead body”, her father said.
“Didn’t I tell you that this girl has been possessed by some demon”, her mother said shaking both her legs and head uncontrollably. “I said it! But you refused to believe me. Now you’ve seen it all with your very eyes”
Adanne walked out of her parents in anger, not waiting for whatever her parents had to say on the matter. She had heard enough for one night. She wasn’t going to have this conversation with them anymore. Her mind had been made up and she didn’t care about their opinion on the matter.
Mr Nwoke raised his right hand to his chest with a grimace on his face, groaning and grasping for air.
“My love, what is the matter?” Mrs. Nwoke screamed in fright. This caught Adanne’s attention. She ran out and saw a disturbing image of her father lying in the floor.
“Call the doctor!”
