Kiki stared wide-eyed at Jessica.
“You don’t say” Kiki said hands akimbo. “You mean Nene slapped you in front of the whole class?” she asked in disbelief.
“Yes oh! She didn’t just slap me, Kiki, she was shouting and telling everyone who cared to listen about how she used to feed me when we were in first year. In fact, I have never been that humiliated in my entire life.”
Kiki was boiling in rage. “And what did you do?” she asked in a sharp cutting voice.
“Nothing, I just walked away.” Jessica said feeling even more dejected.
“Ehn, walked away, just like that? You didn’t return the slap; you didn’t beat her up and teach her a lesson she would never forget. You just walked away. Ha! Honestly Jessica, I don’t know which one is even more depressing, the fact that she embarrassed you in public or that you did nothing about it.”
“What should I have done? Stoop to her level and fight in public? No, I couldn’t do that. That would only have made things worse.”
“Worse for who, you or for her?” Kiki retorted, obviously angry. “Look, sometimes, when people misbehave, you just have to jump into the gutter with them and slug it out just to teach them a lesson. That’s not stooping low, that’s doing the right thing. She wouldn’t dare try that with me. You really fumbled. I would never tolerate that from anyone much less that small girl. I would give her what she deserves.”
Jessica began to think that perhaps Kiki was right. “Maybe I should have retaliated, and shown Nene the stuff I am made of. I should have given her the beating of her life. She certainly is no match for me.” She felt her anger begin to rage as she thought of what she should have done that she didn’t do. Now, in place of shame and embarrassment, she felt rage, and a strong desire to deal with Nene. “I wish I could turn back the hands of time and show that stupid girl a lesson she would never forget.” Hot pangs of regret began to rock her head as she mentally replayed the events of the last hour.
Honestly Jessica, I don’t know which one is even more depressing, the fact that she embarrassed you in public or that you did nothing about it.”
Just then, Nene walked into the girl’s hostel humming victoriously.
Jessica saw her and murmured to herself, “Talk of the Devil.” And then she sprang up suddenly to her feet and pounced on the unsuspecting Nene who backed off in shock, stumbled over the pavement and fell backwards.
Stand up! You foolish girl, you think you have power to fight abi? Oya come and fight, I am ready for you. But Nene didn’t move. Kiki rushed to the scene and bent over the fallen girl.
“Jessica, what have you done?”
